Exercise and How to Manage Stress

Stress can be defined as a state of emotional or mental strain which in most cases have adverse effects. Stress affects the mental health of a person. Causes of stress are very numerous. People are affected by the causes of stress differently. Some people get stressed at their workplace. Among the things at a workstation that can lead to stressful situations are long working hours, working under dangerous conditions, and also being unhappy with the job. The other category of stress is the life stress. These emanate from the death of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job, getting married and much more.

Stress can also emanate from inside a person. It is possible to stress oneself by worrying about some things. Examples of such are fear and certainty, attitude and perceptions, unrealistic expectations, and major life changes. Stress is not something that is healthy. This is why people are advised to try as much as possible to be stress free. Stress has negative health implications. Examples are a headache, fatigue, and irritability and difficulty in sleeping. Some of these conditions are vital. Several ways are used in the management of stress.

Some of these ways are as follows. Stressed people are advised to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. Nicotine and caffeine are known to be stimulants. People mistake these substances for reducing the stress levels but in the real case they increase it. Despite alcohol being a depressant when consumed in large quantities, it is not an effective way of managing the stress. Another way of managing stress is getting enough sleep. This is so, since lack of enough sleep is capable of causing stress. There are also some relaxation techniques that one might try to help them reduce stress. Tests done to majority of these techniques confirm their efficiency.

The other means of stress management is through doing physical exercises. Stress is accompanied by the increase in the levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Exercise can therefore boost the production of these hormones. It is not a must for someone to do a vigorous physical exercise to achieve this. Brisk walking in fresh air can be very helpful. There are even better benefits of incorporating physical exercise into your daily routine.

Exercise helps in stress management following certain mechanisms. Exercise has the effect of pumping endorphins into the body. The endorphins are known as brain’s feel-good transmitters. Exercises help a person to forget about someone’s day irritations. The mood of a person can be improved following an exercise session. Improving the moods of a person is as a result of increased confidence, and lowering symptoms of depression.
